Trump defends immigration stance in tweet

President Donald Trump speaks with reporters in the

US President Donald Trump denied via Twitter that he said anything "derogatory about Haitians" during an immigration meeting at the White House on Thursday, as the country and the world continued to express outrage over his reported comments.

The comments revived charges that the president is racist, and rocked immigration talks that were already on a tenuous footing.

The White House did not initially deny the remark on Thursday, but Trump suggested in a tweet Friday that the "shithole" comment was "not the language used". He also reportedly suggested that the USA should bring in more people from countries like Norway.

This, however, provoked a stinging rebuke from Democratic Senator Dick Durbin, who insisted he had been present at the meeting and heard the president using such foul language.

"He was very kind to the Haitians, he was very eloquent to them, and he was the first president to (have) ever visited Haitians, and he said he was going to be the champion of Haitians", Haitian-American Georges Sami Saati said. Instead, she said, the country has been subjected to Trump's ire.

Haiti, which on Friday marked the eighth anniversary of the disastrous natural disaster which claimed around 220,000 lives, also summoned the USA representative for an explanation.

Mr Durbin added: "When the question was raised about Haitians for example... he said 'Haitians, do we need more Haitians?'" According to the Guardian, he told local Chicago press that Trump "said things which were hate-filled, vile and racist".

"He said: 'Put me down for wanting more Europeans to come to this country. We, along with the president, are committed to solving an issue many in Congress have failed to deliver on for decades".

The church says they have been working with refugees in Haiti since the island was struck by a 7.0 magnitude natural disaster that killed more than 220,000 people in 2010. "Made up by Dems". When I mentioned that fact to him, he said, 'Haitians? "I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians!" The group also implied that the Trump administration harbors misconceptions about Africa and its people.

A group of African ambassadors at the United Nations also issued a statement Friday to condemn the "outrageous, racist and xenophobic" remarks by the president. "And today I stand unified with everyone behind me, and everyone you don't see and we demand an apology".
