Mets Sign Adrian Gonzalez
14 January 2018, 03:50 | Sandy Nunez
The Mets and free agent first baseman Adrian Gonzalez have agreed upon a deal, pending a physical, according to USA Today'sBob Nightengale. Gonzalez is still due nearly $17 million guaranteed in his previous contract from Atlanta and $4.5 million from Los Angeles, leaving him available to sign for the league minimum. He hit just.242 with three homers.
Some of that can be attributed to the former perennial MVP candidate being on the downside of his career, while his balky back certainly did nothing to help his production.
A bargain pickup like Gonzalez fits in with the Mets' stated plan of opening this season under the $154 million payroll with which they began 2017.
Los Angeles traded Gonzalez to the Braves on December 16 in a deal that brought back outfielder Matt Kemp for his second stint with the club. He played for the Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres and the Boston Red Sox before joining the Dodgers in midseason in 2012.

That woman, who was never harmed, and Zengotita-Torres, who was married and the mother of a 14-year-old boy, were co-workers. Investigators say the suspects continued to rob and kill Zengotita-Torres even after they realized she was the wrong target.
Now healthy, Gonzalez figures to compete in spring training with Smith for the starting first base job.
Gonzalez's role at Citi Field will likely to serve as backstop and mentor for Mets first baseman Dominic Smith, a first-round selection from the 2013 draft.
Gonzalez is a five-time All-Star with 311 career home runs who was limited to just 71 games with the Dodgers last season because of back problems. Smith hit.198/.262/.395 with nine homers and 26 RBIs in 49 games.
Gonzalez likely won't be the opening day starter in NY, as the Mets recently signed Lucas Duda to a three-year, $39 million deal.
