Vatican newspaper calls Trump's "shithole" comment offensive

Outrage over Trump slur on 'shithole' countries

- Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-Chairs Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ) and Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) released the following statement in response to racist remarks made this week by President Trump during bipartisan immigration discussions at the White House.

"The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used", Trump insisted in a series of Friday morning tweets.

President Donald Trump's reported derogatory remarks about Haiti and slur against immigrants from "shithole" countries in Africa sent shockwaves around the world, simultaneously becoming a diplomatic issue that could damage America's global image and complicating an immigration reform effort at home. Lindsey Graham broke his public silence.

"Made up by Dems", he tweeted. "I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians!" he posted.

The Trump administration announced late a year ago that it would end a temporary residency permit program that allowed almost 60,000 citizens from Haiti to live and work in the United States following a devastating 2010 natural disaster.

Akufo-Addo's comments follow a strongly worded African Union statement on Friday and a demand from African ambassadors at the United Nations for a retraction and an apology.

Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt had earlier tweeted that, judging by Solberg's visit, "keys to success with Trump are personal charm, a solid trade deficit with the U.S. and buying tons of USA military hardware".

Trump's comments were "shocking and shameful" and "I'm sorry, but there's no other word one can use but racist", said a spokesman for the United Nations human rights office, Rupert Colville.

Thursday's White House huddle was held to discuss a bipartisan deal that would limit immigrants from bringing family members into the country, restrict the green card visa lottery and boost border security, in exchange for shielding hundreds of thousands of young people known as "Dreamers" from deportation.

After making the "shithole" comment, Trump suggested the United States should instead welcome immigrants from places like Norway, whose prime minister he met on Wednesday.

Republican leaders were largely silent, though House Speaker Paul Ryan said the vulgar language was "very unfortunate, unhelpful".

Colville added that the story wasn't "just a story about vulgar language, it's about opening the door to humanity's worst side". Some Democrats are threatening to withhold their votes - which Republicans will need to push that legislation through Congress - unless an immigration accord is reached. He was fuming about the latest bipartisan deal on immigration.

Almost 700,000 Dreamers are at risk of losing deportation relief and work permits ― or already have ― because Trump ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA. He gave Congress until March to come up with a legislative fix.

United Nations human rights chief Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein has previously said the future of the Dreamers should not be used as a bargaining chip to negotiate restrictive immigration measures.

Now, obviously, no country is really a "shithole country", because countries are made up of human beings who have intrinsic worth and value; every nation on the planet has made some positive contributions to human culture, innovation, and politics.

Trump addressed Haiti, but said nothing about his reported comments on Africa. It had sought clarification from the U.S. envoy as to whether Botswana was on the list of African nations Trump would include in his slur, which the White House did not deny he made, "given that there are Botswana nationals residing in the United States".

After the Thursday meeting at the White House - and a few hours before The Washington Post reported news of Trump's "shithole" remarks - Graham was calm and composed when speaking with reporters about how his pitch had gone over with the president and his colleagues.
