U.S. could 'conceivably' return to Paris climate accord

Trump says US could 'go back in' to Paris climate agreement

The U.S. can possibly reenter the Paris climate agreement, President Donald Trump said in a joint conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg.

The Paris agreement's central aim is to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping the global temperature rise in this century well below 2 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5 degree Celsius. French President Emmanuel Macron in December previous year said he was hopeful the U.S. would return to the accord.Commenting on the treaty, Trump said the accord would have taken away the US' "competitive edge".

When he announced last June he was pulling the U.S. out of the accord, Mr Trump said he wanted to negotiate a new "fair" deal that would not disadvantage United States businesses and workers.

Trump's decision in June past year to pull the United States out of the landmark global accord has sparked a wave of anger and dismay at home and also a chorus of disapproval overseas.

He had also said that the U.S. could stay in if the treaty was renegotiated, something which the European Union and other nations quickly ruled out would ever happen. "It took away a lot of our asset values", President Trump said.

The conservative prime minister had said before the meeting that she'd put climate on the agenda in the bilateral talks.

True Lies costar Jamie Lee Curtis tells People she didn't know about the incident, which she calls "very sad and disturbing". We all collectively as a human race have to do that. "It's not a reckoning for Hollywood, it's not a reckoning for America".

But Trump also said he has "no problem" with the agreement, "but I had a problem with the agreement that they signed, because as usual, they made a bad deal".

The Obama administration promised in the pact to reduce the United States' greenhouse gas emissions 26 percent to 28 percent by 2025. Almost every other country in the world has signed the agreement.

Under Trump, the US has made successive roll-backs on environmental protections, scrapping the Clean Power Plan, which sought to inch the USA away from its use of coal-burning energy, and opening previously protected lands up to mineral exploration.

The treaty included promises made by the U.S. - by Trump's predecessor Obama - but there will be no legal consequences if they are not kept.

Trump's meeting with Solberg was the first foreign leader visit with the president in 2018.

Donald Trump also seems to believe that the United States is "very strong on the environment" and that the country's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is out to protect the environment. In fact most of your energy or your electricity is produced by hydro.
