Virginia Beach City Public Schools outline course of action in response to planned student walkout
The groups hope to see participation from students, faculty, and parents of any school or university throughout the Virgin Islands.
"I'm concerned with all of these kids walking out", high school parent Heather Conkright said.
"He's been meeting with students to figure out how those 17 minutes will look", she said.
Under the exemption, students at Stoneman Douglas could take the exams, if they wanted, but they would not be required to test.
"We just want advance notice", said Dan Hollar, a district spokesman. Schools like Powdersville are taking a neutral approach, allowing the walkout but not encouraging it. Students who wish not to participate at the school are asked to remain in class, said Ferguson.
"We have lots of ideas floating around", she said.
The newly formed student council has not decided on the specifics of the gun issues they want changed, Ellis said, but, "We want it to be harder to get guns for mentally disabled people and people on the Federal Bureau of Investigation watch list". McNeill said she's had discussions with teachers about "class-appropriate" activities for students who stay in their classrooms, and there also could be a school-wide message relayed on the intercom during that time as well. That means those who participate in the gathering won't face punishment from the school for leaving class. Their rallies were heard loudly and they have put pressure on lawmakers to enact gun reform during their visits to Tallahassee and during school walkouts.
School administrators will communicate with students to make sure that they are aware of expectations and options regarding the "walkout" prior to March 14th, in order to ensure a safe and secure environment, the letter read.
"This event will not be a gun control protest organized by the school", Principal Chris Ferguson wrote in a Facebook post.
"We knew that if we stood on one side of an extreme opinion that's only going to push people away and set up guards".
In a recent tweet to prospective students, Washington University in St. Louis said "March on".
"If students are leaving our campus, it's hard for us to maintain their safety", said Johnson. It's scheduled for March 14th at 10 a.m. "This is where we should go to feel safe". "Our school principals have worked with students, including student leaders to ensure this time is constructive and meaningful to students".
"I cannot support or endorse allowing our students, your children, to participate in walking out of school which could place them into a potentially unsafe situation", Sharp wrote.
