Apple Acquires Texture Digital Magazine Service, Partly-Owned by Rogers
It has its roots in a 2009 joint venture between Time Inc, Condé Nast, Meredith, Hearst, and News Corp and was launched in 2012 as Next Issue Media.
By purchasing Texture, Apple now has a magazine subscription service to accompany its Apple Music online streaming service as it continues to invest in software subscription offerings to augment its core business of selling iPhones and Mac computers.
Texture offers a $9.99 monthly fee to read an unlimited number of articles from magazines like Vanity Fair, Esquire, National Geographic, Sunset, and Fortune. Details of how much Apple is buying Texture for remain undisclosed. Access great stories, classic recipes, and more from years past. The app works for Android and iOS devices.
Eddy Cue, a top executive at Apple, is expected to discuss the purchase of Texture at SXSW.
Cue said Apple has always taken a more aggressively hands-on approach, setting up strict guidelines and rigorously reviewing each app seeking distribution through the App store.
"I'm thrilled that Next Issue Media, and its award-winning Texture app, are being acquired by Apple", said John Loughlin, CEO of Next Issue Media / Texture, in a statement.
"We're excited Texture will join Apple, along with an impressive catalog of magazines from numerous world's leading publishers", said Apple executive Eddy Cue in a press release. "The Texture team and its current owners could not be more pleased or excited with this development". "We don't try to sell the most smartphones in the world; we don't try to sell the most apps, we try to make the best one". The most obvious outcome of this acquisition would likely involve Texture getting integrated into Apple News, allowing users of Apple News to access its collection of over 200 magazines.
