MUST SEE TV: Venezuelan Refugee Living In Sweetwater Wants To Be An “American Idol!”

Luke Bryan

Will America again fall in love with the singing competition reality show when it returns with new judges, a new network and a new attitude at 8 p.m. Sunday, March 11, on WEWS Channel 5?

Maybe this new crew of judges doesn't have quite the cultural cache of "The Voice's", but maybe it has something even better - a comfortable, easy, congenial vibe that's in sync with the more comfortable, congenial vibe of ABC's version. There are three celebrity judges (this time, they are Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan), a series of auditions that enable amateur vocalists to show off their talents, and eventually a Hollywood-based sing-off that winnows the pack down, week after week, to a singular victor.

ERIC DEGGANS, BYLINE: After watching ABC's two-hour premiere of its "American Idol" reboot, I'm still not sure they answered the most important question.

She explained to People: "We really encourage them".

Perhaps sensing some general need for respite - from unpleasantness, cruelty, bullies - ABC resurrects an American Idol that's cozily familiar, reassuring even, with the franchise's recognizable markers intact and the spikier inclinations of previous incarnations left behind. Now ABC has brought the talent competition back with Ryan Seacrest, as host and producer, who squeezes the gig into his ultra-busy schedule. Plus with Ryan Seacrest still in the hosting seat, what could be better? "I don't want to give you the opportunity, and then you get there and it destroys you". Yet the music is just starting, and, if nothing else, ABC's determination to bring back "American Idol" is emerging as the most intriguing programming ploy of the current season. "I mean, I have a guy and this bass lake and his job is to grow the bass to the biggest bass in the world", Bryan admitted to laughter among the audience.

South Africa vs Australia: International cricket Second Test
Later, the main competition has started and now in the 2nd Test match, Australia got packaged in 243 runs in the first innings. Australia were 86 for 3 in their second innings at tea, still 53 runs behind South Africa's first-innings total of 382.

Leading that charge is a new judging panel that, at least in the first two hours, is less interested in critique than it is in a rapid education. It reigned as TV's No. 1 series for nine years, peaking with 30 million viewers an episode in 2006. Sometimes you have to separate the story from what we're really going for.

KATY PERRY: "Really? I think that people are not telling you the truth".

"What kind of star do you want?". "Something about you is pretty dad-gummed inspiring", the judge says.

On the other hand, the new judges are the most obvious point of differentiation from the past few seasons on FOX. "We're quickly becoming one happy family with the auditions off to a picture-perfect start", Seacrest says early in the first episode, sounding like he's reading from the script of a Disney movie. This strikes me as the whole dark thesis of American Idol in a nutshell - many try, only one succeeds - and makes me think Perry is the most essential addition to the musical thunderdome.
