Troutman man accused in 1986 murder of Massachusetts teenager

Authorities have started proceedings to have Hand brought to MA for prosecution in relation to Gilpin's death, the release states.

Michael Hand, 61, of Troutman, has been charged with murder in the death of Tracy Gilpin, who was 15 when she disappeared in her hometown of Kingston, on October 1, 1986, Fox 25 Boston reported. For the past three decades, we have remained hopeful that Tracy's murderer would be identified.

As a result of that investigation, Cruz said information was developed that prompted Massachusetts State Troopers to travel to North Carolina to arrest Hand on Friday.

Tracy Gilpin was only 15 when she went out on October 1, 1986, to attend a party.

Investigators say they never gave up hope to bring Tracy's killer to justice - especially Tracy's sister, Kerry Gilpin, who is now the Massachusetts Police colonel.

Col. Gilpin said the arrest "leaves us cautiously optimistic that justice for Tracy is within reach". My thoughts today are not just with my own family, but also with all the families who have lost loved ones to violence.

Three weeks later her body was found in Myles Standish Park in Plymouth, and her death was ruled a massive skull fracture by a homicide by the chief medical examiner.

The Gilpin family moved from the seaside village of Manomet in Plymouth, Massachusetts, to the Rocky Nook neighborhood of Kingston, Massachusetts, before the Tracy disappeared.

'We will continue to work tirelessly to find justice for all murder victims'.

They lived in the Rocky Nook area of Kingston. The victim disappeared after walking home from the store in Kingston, after refusing a ride from a man inside a jeep at the store's parking lot.

Since then, Tracy's killer has remained free. She separated from her friends and walked to the Cumberland Farms on Route 3A. The clerk working that night would later tell police she remembered the brunette teen purchasing a pack of cigarettes before going outside to the payphone.
