Britain's Prince Harry and his fiancee Meghan Markle arrive at the Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey in London, Britain, March 12, 2018. Liam Payne, meanwhile, gave a performance at the celebratory event.

Celebrated across the Commonwealth, the day is an opportunity for each of the institution's 53 member states to highlight the positive values of the family of nations.

The most senior members of the Royal family have also reportedly been through similar training exercises in the past.

The Queen became head of the Commonwealth at the age of 26.

The reflection at the service will be given by Dr Andrew Bastawrous, an eye surgeon who has turned a smartphone into an examination tool to combat avoidable blindness in developing counties. Following the service, William, Kate, Harry and Meghan will walk through Dean's Yard to attend a reception.

The royal couple spent time at an event hosted by Stemettes - an initiative that aims to inspire the next generation of women to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) - at Millennium Point, a site that provides workspace for educational and STEM-related organisations.

Meghan Markle has joined the royal family at one of their most formal events of the year - the annual Commonwealth Day service attended by the Queen.

The service, which is the largest annual inter-faith gathering in the United Kingdom, is held every year to celebrate the Queen's lifetime commitment to the Commonwealth as Head of its 53 countries.

The Commonwealth - made up of 53 countries and nearly 2.4 billion people from the old British Empire - is hugely important to the queen, whose leadership has kept it going and strengthened it since she became queen in 1952. The theme of this year's service is "Towards a Common Future", which "emphasizes how the Commonwealth can address global challenges and work to create a better future for all citizens through sub-themes of sustainability, safety, prosperity and fairness", the Palace previously said in a statement.
