Employment in Lawrence and Douglas County fell by almost 2,000 jobs in January as the local jobless rate rose four-tenths of a point to 3 percent.
South Carolina's jobless rate inched up slightly in January, even as the state's employment continued to rise.
The number of nonfarm payroll jobs increased by 7,100 to 2,693,900 jobs while total employment increased by 4,000 to 2,942,000, according to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.
The department said in a news release Monday that the December rate was revised up two-tenths of a point from the preliminary rate of 2.7 percent. Many employers have said they're unable to add jobs because there is a lack of available talent with the right qualifications. The state lost jobs in the government and financial activities sectors and saw little change in manufacturing.
Mining, logging and construction grew by 2,300 jobs, and leisure and hospitality added 1,500 positions, the government data showed. Compared with the previous quarter this indicator increased by 0.3 percentage points.
The low unemployment rates appear to be translating to higher wages for those with jobs. Comparatively, the national unemployment rate declined to 4.1 percent from 4.8 percent.
In the fourth quarter of 2017, the official unemployment rate in Albania, for the population aged 15 years and over is 13.4 %. The county added 8,000 jobs, an increase of 1.3 percent over the year.
The state reported that the number of people working in SC in January was again above 2.2 million.
