While the series will end with a six-episode season, HBO hopes to continue the magic with multiple spinoffs now in development.
"From a budget standpoint going into season two of Big Little Lies without any options in place we've been... um... short of raped", she said. "We are going big", Orsi said. She mentioned that "None of the cast had received the scripts prior, and one by one they started falling down to their deaths".
HBO past year announced that it had teamed with Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island), Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass), Brian Helgeland (Legend) and Carly Wray (The Leftovers) to develop separate spin-off series based on the fantasy world created by writer George R.R. Martin. After the hugely successful Big Little Liesgot picked up for a second despite its formerly "limited" nature, Orsi said the budget for the rest of the network took a major hit to accommodate all the returning stars. Variety is reporting that Francesca Orsi, senior vice president at HBO, recounted the table readings for the final few episodes. While continuing the show through "three, four, five" spinoffs was teased - with the alternative being compared to "corporate malfeasance" - the main draw here was the show's eighth and final season finale. Orsi added that the flood of new series from Netflix was "absolutely diluting" the quality of shows on offer.
"The reason they're getting paid so much is they're so prolific", he said.
