The former England worldwide made the announcement at United's press conference on Monday ahead of the Champions League last-16, second-leg match against Sevilla.

In a news conference on Monday, Manchester United Captain Michael Carrick confirmed what most had been anticipating all along this season- that it will be his last as a player.

It has been an illustrious career in the middle of the Old Trafford turf for Carrick since arriving from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006, playing a whopping 436 matches in that time which has included 19 major trophies which has included five Premier League titles and two European trophies.

The 36-year-old, who won 34 caps for England, underwent a procedure in November to treat an irregular heart rhythm, after which he declared himself "healthy", but he has only played three times since.

Carrick, capped 34 times by England, has looked likely to leave United in recent summers only to pen extensions at a club that rewarded his fine service with a testimonial past year. "It's something that you have got to accept".

"It's kind of been sorted", added Carrick.

Key talking points as South Africa level Test series against Australia
It is indeed insane to think that he is spearheading South Africa's pace attack at the age of 22 and already has 124 Test wickets in his kitty.

Carrick, who is a former England worldwide, joined the Red Devils from Tottenham in 2006 when United's retired veteran manager, Sir Alex Ferguson convinced him to swapped White Hart Lane for the Old Trafford.

He also helped United win the UEFA Champions League (2008), FIFA Club World Cup (2008) and the UEFA Europa League (2017).

Now back in action, he is happy to be retiring on his own terms.

On whether he still hopes to play a part in the run-in after recovering fully from a heart problem earlier in the season: "Obviously, I had the problem in the Burton game, when it started during the second half, and then had a few tests after that". At least I could decide and not be forced because of that, so I was determined to get back fit.

"I understood that I wouldn't be playing as many games, but I've been training hard and trying to keep fit".
