The video, recorded in 2015, was shot by an infrared camera on board an F/A 19 fighter jet traveling at 25,000 feet.

The group that posted the video hopes its release sparks more debate about UFOs.

While the Department of Defence has declined to comment on the latest video, the agency did confirm to ABC News that the US government had run a program for investigating reports of UFOs until 2012. "Got it!" when he locks on.

In a Washington Post op-ed, Mellon, who now works at The Stars Academy of Arts and Science (TTSA), says some US pilots have encountered a UFO and several have even caught footage of the occurrence, but not enough has been done about it. "Look at that flying!" another exclaims.

One of the pilots from the declassified videos published by The Times told ABC that he thought the aircraft he saw was "not from this world".

The footage was released to To the Stars Academy of Arts and Sciences (TTSA), a private research and media group, on Friday, ABC News reported.

Cmdr. David Fravo, who was piloting an F/A-18 during the 2004 Navy training mission, said, "I have never seen anything in my life that has the performance, the acceleration".

Passenger describes chaos of emergency landing
Local news sources report that most passengers boarded another plane for the trip to Dallas that arrived at around 1 am. A Southwest Airlines plane made an emergency landing in Albuquerque after the cabin reportedly filled with smoke.

Video of the incident, along with another similar encounter, was published in December by the New York Times.

In October 2017, Luis Elizondo, the former head of the Pentagon intelligence program investigating UFOs resigned to protest what he described excessive secrecy surrounding the program, and internal opposition to it, the New York Times reported. "It was determined that there were other, higher priority issues that merited funding and it was in the best interest of the DoD to make a change", the statement read.

"The DoD takes seriously all threats and potential threats to our people, our assets, and our mission and takes action whenever credible information is developed".

Christopher Mellon, a former defense official in the George W. Bush and Clinton administrations and an adviser to the Stars Academy, wrote in a Washington Post op-ed that these videos "appear to provide evidence of the existence of aircraft far superior to anything possessed by the United States or its allies".

"We have no idea what's behind these weird incidents because we're not investigating", Mellon wrote.

One of the reasons why there has not been a serious effort is because there is a negative stigma associated with those who believe that the UFOs may be visitors from beyond Earth.

However, he wrote that sightings of unusual and mysterious objects are not new to officials in the defense department and intelligence agencies but "nobody wants to be 'the alien guy in the national security bureaucracy; nobody wants to be ridiculed or sidelined for drawing attention to the issue". "This is true up and down the chain of command, and it is a serious and recurring impediment to progress".
