Pellegrino sacked: Southampton target Marco Silva as next manager

Southampton sack Pellegrino as manager

Hovering just one spot above the relegation zone Southampton are in danger of losing the top-flight status they acquired six seasons ago.

Former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, veteran Martin O'Neill and Koeman, who was named the new Netherlands coach last month, were among the outsiders for the job listed by bookmakers Skybet.

Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Newcastle left the Saints just a point outside the relegation places with only eight games of the Premier League season remaining.

In a statement released yesterday the club said that assistant manager Carlos Compagnucci and assistant first-team coach Xavier Tamarit had also parted company with the club.

As for Puel, he is now in charge at Leicester who, ironically, are eighth in the Premier League, the position that Saints were when they fired the Frenchman.

Cong fumes at BJP for fielding 'non-Kannadiga'
UP BJP vice-president JPS Rathore told PTI, "The party has fielded 11 candidates for the ongoing Rajya Sabha elections from UP". One of its leaders P K Valera has filed his nomination as an independent candidate with the support of some Congress MLAs.

Southampton are not thought to be planning a swoop for Marco Silva as they eye up a replacement for the sacked Mauricio Pellegrino.

Southampton are reportedly interested in luring Brendan Rodgers back to the English Premier League.

The former England boss is THE anti relegation specialist, becoming the firefighter to extinguish all relegation threatened Premier League blazes, having never been previously relegated in his career.

Saints chief Reed sees his brand of attacking football, ability to improve players - like Rodgers dramatically has at Celtic since May 2016 - and tactical nous as being perfectly suited for the St Mary's Stadium.

Southampton wish to get a new manager hired before their FA Cup quarter-final against Wigan, which will be played on Sunday, and Le Tissier joined talkSPORT to react to the sacking.
