Tillerson out at secretary of state, to be replaced by CIA chief Pompeo
Rex Tillerson has been ousted as secretary of state, with current CIA Director Mike Pompeo assuming the role, President Donald Trump announced Tuesday morning. "He will do a fantastic job!" the president tweeted.
Donald Trump has fired his Secretary of State hours after Rex Tillerson backed the UK's claim that the Salisbury nerve agent attack was "highly likely" to have originated in Russian Federation.
Trump also announced that Gina Haspel would replace Pompeo as CIA director - making her the first woman to ever head the country's top spy agency.
Tillerson and Cohn join the ranks of chief of staff Reince Priebus, former communications directors Hope Hicks, Anthony Scaramucci and Mike Dubke, press secretary Sean Spicer, staff secretary Rob Porter, HHS director Tom Price, deputy assistant Sebastian Gorka, chief strategist Steve Bannon, FBI director James Comey, national security advisor Mike Flynn and many other high-ranking officials that have resigned or been fired. "He will continue our program of restoring America's standing in the world, strengthening our alliances, confronting our adversaries, and seeking the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".
Trump's tweet Tuesday came the day after Tillerson blamed Russian Federation for an assassination in London - something the White House had specifically declined to do just hours before.
In a statement issued to The Washington Post, Mr Trump praised both Mr Pompeo and Ms Haspel. "A great deal has been accomplished over the last fourteen months, and I wish him and his family well".
Last year, Tillerson said the United States should talk with North Korea, which Trump quickly shot down. The sensitive diplomacy would be the first face-to-face meeting between the leaders of the US and North Korea, which claims to have missiles capable of striking anywhere in the mainland U.S.
