BJP strategists are eyeing disgruntled elements in the Samajwadi party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BJP) along with the Congress in order to facilitate its ninth candidate to win. BJP has nominated Rajeev Chandrashekar, who was an independent Rajya Sabha member and joined the party yesterday, and the JDS, B M Farooq.
Anil Baluni, the national media head of the BJP and a confidante of party chief Amit Shah, was set to get elected unopposed from Uttarakhand as his was the lone nomination.
Meanwhile, in Gujarat, the BJP fielded three candidates on its mandate to counter a possible move by the Congress. The Congress which has seven MLAs has also chose to support the BSP candidate. Sources said the nominee could be former MP Akhilesh Singh. Former Maharashtra Congress leader Narayan Rane and the BJP's Kerala face V Muralidharan are the the BJP candidates from Maharashtra.
The party has also nominated L Hanumanthaiah, Syed Naseer Hussain and GC Chandrasekhar from Karnataka, while Porika Balram Naik has been nominated to contest from Telangana.
On the other hand, Congress president Rahul Gandhi approved a list of ten candidates, which include only fresh faces as all out going members, barring senior leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi, have been denied re-nominations. The Congress had earlier turned down JD (S)'s request to back its candidate, businessman BM Farook.

The Sena has 63 MLAs, but the Congress does not expect to receive its surplus votes despite the smaller partner's anger at the BJP. Leader of the Opposition Ajay Singh, state Congress chief Arun Yadav and other leaders were present.
