She'll also be reuniting with her Wolf of Wall Street movie-husband Leonardo DiCaprio.
Robbie has been the major pick for the role of Tate for a while, following reports Jennifer Lawrence was rejected because Tate's family thought she was "not pretty enough".
"There has been a lot of press that the script focuses on Charles Manson and the murder spree he orchestrated, but I'm told that is akin to calling "Inglourious Basterds" a movie about Adolf Hitler, when the Nazi leader was only in a scene or two", Deadline's Mike Fleming Jr.
Margot Robbie arrives at the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) at the Royal Albert Hall in London, Britain, February 18, 2018.
Instead, DiCaprio is playing a former Western TV star named Rick Dalton while Pitt is playing his stunt double Cliff Booth, who are trying to make it in "modern day" Hollywood. "Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don't recognize anymore", explains the site.
With Robbie a near lock to join Pitt and DiCaprio, the next major bit of casting will be the actor selected to play controversial filmmaker Roman Polanski.
In a press release about the upcoming film, Tarantino described the film as "a story that takes place in Los Angeles in 1969, at the height of hippy Hollywood".
The film is due to start production later this year, with a release date of August 9 2019 earmarked. It's the first film Tarantino will shoot since severing ties with the Weinstein Company.
