Rex Tillerson seemed visibly shaken in his impromptu farewell speech on Tuesday (March 13), hours after news broke that the now-former U.S. secretary of state had been fired by Donald Trump. The White House fired Goldstein later Tuesday.

On Tuesday afternoon, Trump mentioned the Iran deal when asked by reporters about the high-level shakeup: "When you look at the Iran deal, I think it's awful; I guess [Tillerson] thought it was OK".

"I actually got on well with Rex, but really it was a different mindset, it was a different thinking", Trump told reporters outside the White House before boarding a helicopter. Tillerson was appointed to represent the United States and carry out President Trump's agenda.

"I'll now return to private life, as a private citizen, as a proud American, proud of the opportunity I had to serve my country", Tillerson said.

He said his tenure ends on 31 March but he would delegate his responsibilities to John Sullivan, deputy secretary of state, at the end of Tuesday.

It's not that Rex Tillerson would ever rank as one of the greats as secretary of State.

Finnegan tweeted: "The Secretary had every intention of staying because of the critical progress made in national security".

Then Goldstein, hours after making those comments, was fired, too.

"It is under 2,000 sorties to destroy the Iranian nuclear capacity", Pompeo told reporters at the time.

Multiple White House officials said that Tillerson had been informed of the decision Friday, while he was in Ethiopia.

Tillerson urged his policy planning team, undersecretaries and assistant secretaries to remain at their posts "to continue our mission at the State Department in working with the interagency process".

Tillerson was aghast at Trump's threats of war against the Kim Jong Un regime.

McKinsey & Company explain that most producers "lack the cash for investments needed to remain viable in the long run". But in the short-term, things could become pretty ugly for the industries in need of those products today.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly.

Tillerson's statement was seen as an important show of solidarity with Britain and a forceful rebuke of Russian Federation, which has been accused of meddling in the 2016 presidential election in order to help elect Donald Trump.

"Trump has vowed not to [waive sanctions], effectively abrogating the deal, unless tougher terms are unilaterally imposed on Iran", Glaser said.

It's no secret that Tillerson and Trump had a combative relationship. "The question is, how much juice does she have in the White House?"

Tillerson's resignation has been anticipated since last fall, when newspapers reported that he had called the president a "moron".

Gina Haspel, a veteran CIA clandestine officer picked by President Donald Trump on Tuesday to head the CIA, is a controversial figure, backed by many in the USA intelligence community but regarded warily by some in Congress for her involvement in the agency's "black site" detention facilities. Will the Central Intelligence Agency director and hawkish former Republican congressman be the hard-line diplomat Donald Trump seeks?

Mr Trump tweeted that Mr Pompeo, "will do a fantastic job!" and thanked Mr Tillerson for his service.

Pompeo would need to be confirmed by the Senate.

It was in truth a relationship that was never going to last. "I would love to be listening in on the diplomatic dispatches around the world right now". He also praised Trump, saying, "His leadership has made America safer". Trump's announcement came only a few hours after Tillerson landed in Washington after a trip that had been cut short.

Senior White House officials said Trump wanted his new team in place before any summit with Kim, who invited the U.S. president to meet by May after months of escalating tensions over North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.

Trump's decision to impose steep tariffs on steel and aluminum imports was the final straw for the former Wall Street banker.

More consequentially for Canada, it's hard to imagine him as a counterweight to the protectionists dominating Mr. Trump's cabinet table.
