Pay discrepancies have also been in focus in the United Kingdom - where The Crown is shot - after recent revelations that male presenters at the BBC were paid substantially more than female ones.

While "The Crown's" first two seasons featured a pay gap between Foy and Smith, Mackie assured the audience at INTV that the gap would no longer be in effect as the show moves into Season 3.

"Going forward, no-one gets paid more than the queen", Variety quoted Ms Mackie as saying.

"We put that money on the screen", said Andy Harries, the chief executive of Left Bank, adding that 120 different costumes were created for the queen just for Season 2.

But for Foy, it's too late. Foy not getting equal pay on a show where her character and Smith's are constantly fighting about him feeling emasculated by her power is so deliciously poetic I could nearly laugh.

For the forthcoming third season of the Netflix drama, Prince Phillip has yet to be cast, though Helena Bonham Carter will portray Princess Margaret.

New Video Shows Potential Alien UFO Sighting
The video, recorded in 2015, was shot by an infrared camera on board an F/A 19 fighter jet traveling at 25,000 feet. Video of the incident, along with another similar encounter, was published in December by the New York Times .

Foy, however, will not be reprising her role as Queen Elizabeth II. A replacement for Smith's role as Prince Philip has not been announced yet.

Heavy is the head that wears the crown, but that doesn't mean it's more expensive. Beyond being the main character in the series, Foy's critically-acclaimed performance has won prestigious awards.

She earned a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actor's Guild Awards for best actress following the first season.

When The Crown premiered in 2016, Smith was the more recognizable star thanks to his 2010-2013 tenure as the 11th Doctor on Doctor Who. Her turn in BBC's Wolf Hall earned her a BAFTA nomination, and the series as a whole was a massive critical and commercial success.

In January, Forbes reported that the 10 highest-paid male actors in Hollywood brought in a total of $488.5 million, while the 10 highest-paid women actors earned less than half of that total, with $172.5 million.
