High school teacher accidentally fires gun injuring 17-year-old student during a firearm safety class
Just as students are staging a walk out to protest gun violence, a high school teacher has injured three of his students by accidentally firing the (illegal) semiautomatic weapon he brought in to class to teach gun safety.
UPDATE 5pm: Sand City Police Chief Brian Ferrante says that Alexander had his last gun safety training "a little less than a year ago".
However, the student's father, Fermin Gonzales, told KSBW 8 that it was his understanding that fragments from the bullet ricocheted off the ceiling and lodged in the boy's neck.
Although Alexander is allowed to carry a weapon since he is a reserve police officer, the authorities don't know if he was granted permission to bring a firearm on campus.
The incident comes amid a national debate on how to protect students from mass shootings like the one that took the lives of 17 students in Parkland, Fla., on February 14. Counseling will be available to any students who need it, the email said.
'We want to make you aware of an accident that occurred in the Administration of Justice class today at Seaside High School.
Allegedly, while delivering the lecture, Alexander drew out his service gun and pointed it towards the ceiling.
Teachers can not legally possess firearms in California classrooms.

Classes at the school resumed shortly after the unfortunate incident.
Alexander has served as a reserve officer for more than a decade and was named Reserve Officer of the Year in 2013 by the California Reserve Peace Officers Association for heroics during the course of duty, Ferrante told local media that Alexander, who has a history of positive professionalism.
Alexander has been placed on administrative leave as the officials look into the incident.
