Physicist Stephen Hawking dies at 76

Stephen Hawking dies aged 76, family says

Renowned British physicist Stephen Hawking, whose mental genius and physical disability made him a household name and inspiration across the globe, has died at age 76, his family said Wednesday.

Hawking died peacefully at his home in the early hours of Wednesday morning, his family has said in a statement.

"We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today", professor Hawking's children, Lucy, Robert, and Tim said in a statement carried by Britain's Press Association news agency.

Professor Hawking contracted motor neurone disease in 1963 and was given two years to live but he went on to study at Cambridge and became one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists since Albert Einstein. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humor inspired people across the world. He one said, 'It would not be much of a universe if it wasn't home to the people you love.' We will miss him forever.

He was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis at the age of 21, a disease that eventually confined him to a wheelchair and took away this ability to speak, leaving Hawking to communicate through a voice synthesizer.

Hawking, whose 1988 book "A Brief History of Time" became an unlikely worldwide bestseller and cemented his superstar status, dedicated his life to unlocking the secrets of the Universe. His great discoveries and work include Hawking radiation, Penrose-Hawking theorems, and many more.

The account garnered one million fans within its first few hours and now has almost five million, with his infrequent posts typically generating tens of thousands of admiring comments and earning him the affectionate nickname "Hawking Dada", or "Uncle Hawking".

TDP protests in Parliament demanding special status for Andhra Pradesh
However, as the pandemonium continued, Kurien adjourned the proceedings of the House for the day after barely a couple of minutes. YS Chowdary, a lawmaker of Andhra Pradesh's ruling party TDP too gave an Adjournment Motion notice in Rajya Sabha over the same.

He said: "Perhaps one day we will be able to use gravitational waves to look back into the heart of the Big Bang".

The role helped earn Hawking a place as a pop-culture icon - he joked he was often mistaken for a character on "The Simpsons" - and he praised the series as "the best thing on American television".

Hawking said making the first moves into space would "elevate humanity" because it would have to involve many countries.

"His passing has left an intellectual vacuum in his wake", tweeted Neil deGrasse Tyson.

It's also believed that the scientist was a rash driver. "Think of it as a kind of vacuum energy permeating the fabric of spacetime that defies measure". He received his PhD in applied mathematics/theoretical physics, with specialty in general relativity and cosmology from the University of Cambridge in 1966, and was appointed to a professorship there in 1977.

Stephen William Hawking was born in Oxford on 8 January 1942. "If we find the answers to these questions, we really shall know the mind of God".
