Netanyahu warns of N arms race in West Asia

Trump told Netanyahu US will withdraw from Iran deal if demands aren’t met report

The order was announced to deal with "the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States constituted by the actions and policies of the Government of Iran".

Trump set May 12 as the deadline for reaching an agreement on how to change the Iran deal with the three European countries. "It's Trump's line", said another European diplomat.

In a January 13 cable, the State Department sketched out a path under which the three European allies would simply commit to try to improve the deal over time in return for Trump keeping the pact alive by renewing sanctions relief in May. What if Iran becomes a party to that war more directly and overtly rather than clandestinely or covertly, and that becomes a conflict that doesn't just embroil Israel and potentially us by extension but also many of our other allies in the region?

Critics of the nuclear agreement welcomed Tillerson's departure. Earlier this year, the President waived sanctions to give our lawmakers and our allies time to act. It lifts sanctions placed on Iran in exchange for Iran abandoning its nuclear weapon ambitions.

"In recent days the Trump administration has, if anything, been toughening its stance on what it would take to make the Iran deal worth staying in", Ceren said.

It is unclear how Mike Pompeo becoming US secretary of state may affect the Iran nuclear deal. But analysts said European banks and other firms are already reluctant to do business in Iran due to the threat of a possible "snap-back" of US sanctions and don't want to lose their access to the vast American market.

The move is the latest in a series of measures by Washington aimed at dealing with one of the greatest diplomatic hurdles before Donald Trump's administration, to contain the regime in Iran while keeping up to America's global commitments within the JCPOA. Trump cited Former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's support for the deal, known officially as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as a reason for the top diplomat's surprise sacking Tuesday.

Other European officials and former US officials said Pompeo's rise, if he is confirmed as secretary of state by the Senate, might have a more ambiguous effect on the negotiations and that, in any case, Trump's views are paramount.

If the deal unravels and Iran concludes it has no economic incentive to hold back on its nuclear work, then Tehran could expel United Nations inspectors and head down a fast track to building nuclear weapons - possibly in a matter of months. That stance was echoed Tuesday by the USA general who heads the US military command responsible for the Middle East and Central Asia.
