President Donald Trump is considering firing Secretary of Veterans Affairs David Shulkin and replacing him with Energy Secretary Rick Perry in the post, sources told the New York Times and CNN.
A source familiar with the White House discussions told The Associated Press that Mr. Trump has floated the notion of the Cabinet reshuffle as a way to right the ship at the VA, believing Shulkin has become a distraction to the department's work. An armed guard reportedly stands outside his office, in part due to the upheaval and in part as a response to threats Shulkin received after the I.G. report was made public.
"We can do better and we have to do better" throughout the entire VA health care system of 170 hospitals and more than 1,100 clinics, Shulkin said at a news conference.
Possible replacements for Energy Secretary show Trump also is unfamiliar with the responsibilities of the Energy Secretary.
Last month, Missal issued a scathing report charging that Shulkin wrongly charged the $4,132 airfare for his wife on a trip to Denmark and London last July, and also accepted free tickets to the Wimbledon tennis tournament.
That tenor began to change in recent months, as Dr. Shulkin increasingly butted heads with conservative Trump administration officials over one of the White House's top policy priorities for the department: the expansion of government-subsidized private health care for veterans, outside the government-run V.A. health system. Engaged in an all-out cold war with senior staffers, Shulkin managed to avoid the axe following accusations that he misused taxpayer funds to bring his wife on a European vacation.
Trump did not make a formal offer to Perry when the two men met on Monday, the report said.
