UCLA faces St. Bonaventure in NCAA First Four Game
The victor will be the No. 11 seed in the East Region and face No. 6 Florida (20-12) on Thursday in Dallas. Limiting St. Bonaventure's second-chance opportunities is an obvious key, but the Bruins have the players to do it. Making it a focus should ensure a victory for UCLA.
UCLA IN DAYTON?: Coach Steve Alford, who has led the Bruins to the tournament for the fourth time in five seasons, said he was surprised they were picked last and were sent to Dayton. St. Bonaventure force 14.3 turnovers per game on average, but UCLA turned the ball over 20 times.
In their overtime loss against Arizona in the PAC-12 tournament the Bruins were out rebounded by nine, surely getting to one of those boards would have helped the Bruins win the game.
Although this was the first time Wilkes ever watched the selection show, it was the last time Thomas Welsh got to take in selection Sunday as a Bruin. The team said he was sidelined "as a precaution" and that the injury was not long-term. The Bonnies lost their opening game in their last three NCAA Tournament appearances in 1978, 2000 and 2012. This will be the senior center's third NCAA Tournament appearance. This will be the 7th season that St. Bonaventure will play in the Big Dance.
St. Bonaventure's odds to win the NCAA Tournament were 500-1 according to BetDSI coming into this one.
UCLA's junior guard Aaron Holiday averages a Pac 12-best 20.3 points, 5.8 assists and drains 43.3 percent from 3-point range, while the senior duo of Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley for the Bonnies combined to score nearly 40 per contest and have connected on 177 tries behind the arc between them.
"Would we like to be playing two games instead of three?" Its enrollment is 2,100 - 1,635 undergraduates and 465 graduate students, according to the university.
St. Bonaventure has approximately 400 alumni living in Binghamton, including 2006 alum Derek Russell.
DID YOU KNOW: Florida, which awaits the victor of the play-in game, has beaten UCLA three times in the NCAA Tournament since 2006. Finals will begin next Monday when the team would be preparing for a East Region semifinal if it wins its next three games. "It's a demanding stretch for our guys". We know how loud it gets.
