In a press conference on the Syria attack this morning, Mrs May said Britain can not allow the use of chemical weapons to be normalised.
British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Saturday that it was right and legal to order cruise missile strikes against Syria after a chemical attack on civilians in the town of Douma.
May said intelligence and open source accounts indicated that the regime was behind the attack in Douma last Saturday.
"There is no practicable alternative to the use of force to degrade and deter the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime", May said in a televised statement.
Alexander Yakovenko, the Russian ambassador to London, said the White Helmets, a British-funded civil defense force, were responsible for staging fake chemical attacks.
May said she would address parliament on Monday about the strikes.
French President Emmanuel Macron said the strikes had been limited so far to Syria's chemical weapons facilities.
"This collective action sends a clear message that the global community will not stand by and tolerate the use of chemical weapons".
This is the first time as Prime Minister that I have had to take the decision to commit our armed forces in combat - and it is not a decision I have taken lightly.
"I think it is right that the global community has come together and said we will not accept this", she added.
Britain's defence ministry said in a statement that four British Tornado jets had fired Storm Shadow missiles at the Syrian base 24 km west of Homs at 0100 GMT.

President Trump said the three allies had "marshaled their righteous power against barbarism and brutality".
"As we have seen in the past, inaction has its consequences - so PM right to join forces with our allies to take targeted & appropriate action".
This persistent pattern of behavior must be stopped - not just to protect innocent people in Syria from the horrific deaths and casualties caused by chemical weapons but also because we can not allow the erosion of the global norm that prevents the use of these weapons.
"Bombing can not substitute for diplomacy", he said. We have sought to use every possible diplomatic channel to achieve this.
"The Syrian regime has continued to use chemical weapons and will continue to do so".
He reiterated that Canada condemns the use of chemical weapons in Ghouta.
