The smartwatch doesn't have to be under warranty and "Apple will authorise coverage for eligible devices for three years after the original date of purchase", MacRumors reported. The free fix only applies to Series 2 watches in the 42mm variant and that includes all models of this watch. Apple notes, however, that all models will be subject to a "visual-mechanic" inspection prior to service. Not included in the program, however, are any 38mm models, or Series 1 and Series 3 Watches. Thus far, there haven't been any reports of the Apple Watch Series 3 suffering from expanded battery issues, though it could still be too early to tell as such problems generally take sometime to manifest.

The first-generation Apple Watch (Series o) seemingly suffered from the same problem, with Apple implementing a similar 3-year fix program for affected users.

"A swollen battery can prevent an Apple Watch from powering on or cause the display to burst open".
