Desperate Search For Passenger Swept Overboard Off P&O Cruise Ship Called Off
The search continued throughout the night and into the early hours of the morning with rough conditions and large swell making the operation hard. Police say there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances at this time, but investigators will meet the ship when it arrives in Brisbane early Sunday. High winds and rough seas made the search hard.
"We are still in the area of the incident and the weather conditions with the swell three to four metres, as you can see outside, the strong wind and choppy seas, made our search extremely challenging".
Authorities in Australia and New Caledonia said they had issued a call for other vessels to assist in the search, but the ship was in remote waters. "Ship going round and round searching".
In line with normal procedure, the Pacific Dawn incident has been referred to Queensland Police and to the Coroner for appropriate inquiries.
Passengers said the woman's husband saw her fall and went into shock.
Both AMSA and P&O said their thoughts and prayers were with the woman's family, which had been notified.

Intital investigations indicated that the woman went overboard 150 nautical miles - nearly 300 kilometres - from New Caledonia, the Queensland Police said in a statement.
