Russia vetoes US bid to form new Syria chemical weapons inquiry
April 2018: Russian Federation vetoed a US-drafted resolution after 12 countries backed the measure.
Of the 15 current members of the security council, only Russia, China and Bolivia voted in favor of Russia's resolution, Reuters said.
Yesterday's meeting marked the 12th time Russian Federation has used its veto to block Council action on Syria.
"I'd as soon as once more ask you, as soon as once more beseech you, to chorus from the plans that you just're presently creating for Syria", he stated after the council did not approve a 3rd draft decision on chemical weapons assaults in Syria.
Russian ambassador to Beirut also said that Moscow would respond to any U.S. military actions against Syria.
The White House said that, in a telephone call, Trump and British Prime Minister Theresa May "agreed not to allow the use of chemical weapons to continue".
Russian Federation on Tuesday vetoed a US -drafted United Nations Security Council resolution that would have set up an investigation into chemical weapons use in Syria following an alleged toxic gas attack in rebel-held Douma, AFP reported.
Damascus agreed to hand over its chemical arsenal in 2013, narrowly avoiding American and French air strikes in retaliation for a suspected sarin attack.
The fact-finding mission from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons was expected to head to Douma, where the suspected attack took place and where Russian Federation said rebels had now capitulated to government control.
It was not immediately clear whether the announcement by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) would delay or prevent a USA strike in Syria.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday praised the airstrike.
Final yr, america launched strikes from two Navy destroyers towards a Syrian air base.
Despite the worldwide revulsion over chemical weapons attacks, the death toll from such incidents in Syria is only a fraction of the hundreds of thousands of combatants and civilians killed since the war began in 2011.
Iran is one of Assad's strongest backers and has sent thousands of troops and allied militiamen to support his forces.
The vote reflected the deep divisions in the U.N.'s most powerful body, which has been paralyzed in dealing with the seven-year Syrian conflict and chemical weapons use in the country. The group is the implementing body for the Chemical Weapons Convention of 1997, which has been signed by 192 member states.
"I would once again ask you, once again beseech you, to refrain from the plans that you're now developing for Syria", he said after the council failed to approve a third draft resolution on chemical weapons attacks in Syria.
Trump suggested Monday he had little doubt that Syria was to blame, but neither he nor other administration officials have produced hard evidence.
At least 60 people were killed and more than 1,000 injured in Saturday's suspected chemical weapons attack on the town of Douma, according to a Syrian relief group.
"The situation in the world is becoming more and more chaotic but all the same we hope that common sense will finally prevail and global relations will take a constructive path", he said.
The draft resolution would have condemned "the aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic by the US and its allies in violation of global law and the U.N. Charter".
