UFC on Fox 29: Poirier vs. Gaethje Results
Poirier knew his fight with Justin Gaethje would be like this. My goal is to prosper and be a world champion and make money and retire and say, 'I did it'.
Last night's Dustin Poirier vs. Justin Gaethje fight is already being touted as an early "Fight of the year" candidate.
"I've got about five fights in me".
Poirier appeared willing to fight on despite the effect it had on his vision and argued with the cageside doctor and referee to continue. With his legs chewed up by Gaethje's most valuable weapon, Poirier began shooting for takedowns, but the ex-WSOF champ shucked off every one of his attempts, kept walking Poirier down, and momentarily rocked him with a right hand.
As Gaethje opened Round 4 with another leg kick, Poirier countered with a beautifully timed left straight that put him on skates, then unloaded a typhoon of strikes that sent him to the canvas and prompted Dean to wave it all off 33 seconds in.
It was the 29-year-old's 20th fight in the UFC, but he is yet to have a chance to challenge for a title.
Poirier was still ahead on all three cards and left no doubt in the fourth round, stunning Gaethje with the left hand and burying him in a flurry of punches until Dean stepped in to stop it.
Three UFC fights and a 1-2 record within the promotion might suggest that "The Highlight" hasn't exactly taken to his new home with any real success.
Now, when you consider the current title shot picture in the lightweight division, and that it includes names like Tony Ferguson and Conor McGregor, one might think Poirier's further down the list.
What remains unsure, however, is whether Poirier will get his wish for an instant title shot.
"Absolutely", UFC president Dana White said when asked if Poirier would be considered to face Nurmagomedov next. The former featherweight contender feels reborn in his return to 155 pounds and has added plenty of poise and polish to his exciting style.
