Sensex stages recovery after falling 300 points in early trade
The indexes entered positive territory almost 2.5 hours before the market closing after U.S. air strikes on Syria appeared to be having scant impact on trading, and oil prices fell back.
The key Indian equity markets traded marginally lower on Monday afternoon weighed on by heightened geo-political tensions in the Middle East, along with broadly negative cues from the Asian markets.
On the NSE, the top gainers were Cipla, Grasim Industries and Lupin, while the top losers were Tata Motors, Infosys and Vedanta. Crude shed some weight while bank and auto stocks rallied due to a marginal ease in WPI inflation to 2.47 per cent in March.
The index had risen 1,173.88 points in the past seven sessions.
At 10am, Sensex was down 0.12% at 34,151.86 points, while the Nifty 50 edged down 0.14% to 10,466 points.
The Sensex touched a high of 34,341.46 points and a low of 33,899.34 points during the intra-day trade. 30-share BSE Sensex lost nearly 150 points to open below 34,000-mark, but the index soon mad e a comeback and was at 34,119.45, still 73.20 points down, at 9.30 am.
Besides, reflecting further improvement in the economic situation, industrial production grew by a healthy 7.1 per cent in February while the key retail inflation slipped to a five-month low of 4.28 per cent in March, official data showed on Thursday.
Furthermore, Infosys ended with a loss of 3 percent after lowering EBIT margin guidance for FY19, reported Moneycontrol. The stock was the biggest contributor to the losses on Sensex.
The BSE market breadth was bearish with 1,445 declines and 982 advances.
