US Retail Sales Rose 0.6% in March

Retail Sales Rebounded in March According to Advance Estimate

Gas station receipts fell by 0.3 percent in March - the largest drop since July - largely due to cheaper gasoline. The organization said that the three-month moving average for the first quarter increased 4.8% annually, with total 2018 retail sales estimated to see an annual gain between 3.8%-to-4.4%.

Spending at US retailers rose broadly in March, rebounding after a weak start this year for consumer spending despite a solid labor market and growing worker paychecks.

Auto sales surged in March, sending the United States retail sector higher for the first time in four months, helped by increased spending in other areas, according to government data released on Monday (Apr 16).

"This is a healthy spending report despite market volatility, unseasonable weather and uncertain economic policies", NRF Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz said in a statement. "The biggest risk to spending is in market fluctuations that could affect confidence, but we expect these basic improvements in economic fundamentals to continue".

General merchandise stores were up 6.3% year-over-year and up 0.3% from February seasonally adjusted.

Sales rose at grocery stores, restaurants and bars, and drug stores.

Clothing and clothing accessory stores were up 6.1 percent year-over-year but down 0.8 percent from February seasonally adjusted.

Building materials and garden supply stores were up 3.8% year-over-year but down 0.6% from February seasonally adjusted.

The improvement in demand went beyond a bump in auto sales, as consumers went shopping at furniture and home stores along with electronics and appliance sellers.

Health and personal care stores were up 0.4 percent year-over-year and up 1.4 percent from February seasonally adjusted. Receipts at sporting goods and hobby stores dropped 1.8 percent.
