Nasa is poised to launch a US$337 million (S$441.92 million) washing machine-sized spacecraft that aims to vastly expand mankind's search for planets beyond our solar system, particularly closer, Earth-sized ones that might harbour life.

Tess for short - is embarking Monday on a two-year quest to find and identify mystery worlds thought to be lurking in our cosmic backyard.

"Humans have wondered forever whether we were alone in the universe, and until 25 years ago, the only planets we knew about were the eight in our own solar system", he told reporters on the eve of the TESS launch.

Presently, more than a decade since the MIT scientists initially proposed the mission, TESS is about to get off the ground.

"It is very exciting".

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is ready to go, as is its SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket ride, mission officials said during a pre-launch briefing today (April 15).

Spurs boss Pochettino: Man City showed us why they're the best
Overall, I though City's attack was much more direct than we are used to seeing. "It's more hard (to win in England)". Speaking after the game, and quoted on the Sky Sports website , the Spurs boss said: "There's nothing to worry about".

Here's a peek at little Tess and its creators' big ambitions. In that time, it's expected to find more than 1,500 exoplanet candidates.

The launch window tomorrow lasts just 30 seconds. NASA says it's somewhere between the size of a refrigerator and a stacked washer and dryer. For example, if a planet passes in front of a star, TESS will be able to measure a dip in luminosity and then determine whether a previously unknown world is out there. It would sail around the Earth every 13.7 days, in an elliptical orbit. It will take Tess two weeks to circle Earth.

Four wide-field cameras will give TESS a field-of-view that covers 85 percent of our entire sky. That's why NASA, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and and other collaborators are targeting stars within hundreds or, at most, thousands of light-years: It will make the detailed searches yet to come that much easier.

During its almost ten-year term in space, the Kepler mission confirmed more than 2,600 exoplanets, many of them thousands of light years away.

"We expect TESS will discover a number of planets whose atmospheric compositions, which hold potential clues to the presence of life, could be precisely measured by future observers".

ALIEN LIFE: Tess has no instruments capable of detecting life.
