Kia's mild-hybrid technology, which it calls 'EcoDynamics+' will be offered first in the Kia Sportage SUV, before appearing in the Kia Ceed hatchback in 2019 and then in other models in the range. The new system is created to both reduce emissions and improve performance.

The compact nature of the technology means that integrating the EcoDynamics+ mild-hybrid system into existing vehicle architecture is relatively straightforward.

It features an electric motor that provides up to 10kW of extra power, reducing the diesel engine's workload during acceleration.

In "motor" mode the battery is discharged under acceleration, providing additional torque to the engine for a slight boost in performance under hard acceleration.

The added benefit of the tech is that when coasting towards a junction, the duration of the "stop" part of a start/stop system can be extended, which further helps to reduce fuel demands from the engine.

Kia did not say how much range the Sportage will have with the engine switched off when using the system.

Gap 'sorry' for not showing Taiwan as part of China
The T-shirts themselves were not actually sold in China, said the Gap headquarters in Shanghai to the Global Times . According to the state-owned Global Times , the map also left out southern Tibet and the South China Sea.

Kia hasn't released any specs yet, but says that the 48V battery will be located beneath the boot floor, at least in the case of the Sportage.

The electrified models will be two of 16 new advanced-powertrain vehicles Kia will introduce by 2025, including a electric version of Kia's Niro SUV later this year. The starter generator is mounted to the engine via a belt, and provides quick starts-so the engine can remain off when the vehicle is stopped-thereby reducing emissions.

The system harvests kinetic energy from the vehicle during in-gear deceleration and braking and uses the power to recharge the batteries before deploying its electric load, in "motor" mode, under acceleration. The battery will link into the vehicle's power system allowing a significant reduction in the size of the 12-volt starter battery and the starter motor, which will normally only be required for cold starts at low temperatures.

Expect to hear more details soon on the Sportage's use of the EcoDynamics+ powertrain, as well as United Kingdom pricing and specifications.

Kia will provide more detailed plans for the roll-out of its new mild-hybrid technology in the coming months.

EcoDynamics+ can be used in petrol and diesel cars with front, rear or four-wheel drive, so it could appear in any future Kia model.
