At least 28 people died of carbon monoxide poisoning because drivers forgot to turn off the ignition

According to The Times, there have been at least 28 deaths and 45 injuries caused by carbon monoxide emitted from vehicles with keyless ignitions since 2006.

"We're aware of 25 deaths involving carbon monoxide in motor vehicles with keyless ignitions which have been left running unintentionally in an enclosed space", Sean Kane, founder and president of Massachusetts-based consulting firm Safety Research and Strategies Inc., told The Globe and Mail. To date, although automobile makers have installed warning systems into their keyless-ignition cars voluntarily, there are no universe standards for each system.

The Society of Automotive Engineers has called for automakers to install safety features, like beeps, to warn drivers if their vehicles are still running.

Keyless cars have a risky downside.

While convenient, keyless cars can sometimes have a deadly effect, according to a report from the New York Times.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) then proposed a federal regulation inspired by the recommendation, but the regulation received opposition from the auto industry and has yet to be implemented, according to The Times.

The New York Times number comes from a variety of sources, including news reports, lawsuits, and police and fire records that have been tracked by advocacy groups.

Isn't the easiest fix to this isolated problem for the cars to automatically turn off after a set number of minutes when being idle?
