Parks and Wildlife kills bear
A bear that was involved in an attack on a girl in Colorado was tracked down and killed, according to reports.
The woman told Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) officers that her daughter went outside at about 2.30am on Sunday, Mother's Day in the USA, after hearing noises she thought might be coming from her dog. When she went outside, she saw a large black bear dragging her daughter. The bear eventually dropped the girl after the mother began screaming at it.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers are trying to find the bear with the help of federal wildlife services personnel.
She was listed in fair condition in the afternoon but chief operating officer Bryan Johnson says her family didn't want to release any more information. The woman told authorities that Kimberly had gone outside to investigate noises in the yard she may have thought was her dog. "Based on bear behavior, it's possible this bear will come back to the area".
The little girl needed more than 70 stitches but doctors expect her to "mend very well", hospital spokeswoman Teri Cavanagh said.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife, in a statement on its website, told residents to secure their trash, keep pet food inside, and tell officials about any bear sightings in residential areas. The father described the girl's wounds, saying she had been bitten on her buttocks and leg, and said that she was not bleeding severely from the wounds at the time of the call. In the last five years, there have been 13 reported black bear attacks, including Sunday's. Officers killed the bear before it entered the trap.
Low food quantities force bears to head into neighborhoods and cars to look for garbage to eat.
