Aussie regulator investigating Google for using $626 million of user data to secretly track movements
According to the Australian authority, this data transfer has created privacy issues for almost ten million Android mobile users in the country, who are paying telecom service providers for gigabyte consumption at the time of data harvesting.
In the event, new features of Google Maps were also unveiled and will be rolling out these coming months both on Android and iOS. These apps also push ads to the users' phones via Google Mobile Services, and URLs are launched in web views that redirect to the kinds of "you won" scam pages.
Sens. Richard Blumenthal, D-Connecticut, and Ed Markey, D-Massachusetts, wrote the Federal Trade Commission on Monday, urging it to investigate Google's collection of location data. It does so by tracking them and collecting information about their browsing habits. Furthermore, the software company has revealed that Android devices include a barometer which allow Google to use air pressure to determine a person's exact location inside a multistory building.
According to reports: "Google has mapped IP addresses, Wi-Fi connection points, and mobile towers". Google tracking Android users with help from nearby cellular towers was confirmed by the company itself previous year.
"We are exploring how much consumers know about the use of location data and are working closely with the Privacy Commissioner".
The social media giant said improved technology using artificial intelligence had helped it to act on 3.4 million posts containing graphic violence, almost three times more than it had in the last quarter of 2017.
Like the USA senators, Australian regulators question whether consumers have given valid consent for the extent of Google's information collection. This means that once you download the app and sign-in with your Google account, Google News will already be populated with stories and headlines it thinks you will care about.
Google then uses this information to help advertisers.
Democrat Senators Richard Blumenthal and Edward Markey fired off their request-that-can't-be-ignored (PDF) lat last week, asking the FTC to "open an investigation into the potential deceptive acts and practices used by Google to track and commoditize American consumers". He added that Oracle's presentation was extremely interesting and should make people look deeper into digital platforms before jumping in head first and assuming that all of your information is secure.
