Fasting month of Ramadan starts today

Ramazan 2018: Holy month of fasting starts in Gulf and far East countries from May 17

Traditionally, countries announce if their moon-sighting council spots the Ramadan crescent the evening before fasting begins. "There has been no moon sighting in Canada or even North America". It is a time where Muslims fast every day from dawn to sunset, and in the USA that is approximately 16 hours of no food and water every day for a month. However, since one of the eight steps of ablution includes the rinsing of the mouth, and accidentally swallowing the water during this step would break your fast.

With Ramadan starting on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, the 30-day period will come to an end on Thursday, June 14, 2018.

Islamic scholars are firm that if the Ramadan moon is sighted in most parts of the Middle East today, then it would be viewed in Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Indian subcontinent tomorrow.

Fasting is meant to bring the faithful closer to God and remind them of those less fortunate.

Ramadan, the month-long fast for Muslims, begins this week and one Vancouver nutrition expert has some tips to help you maintain your health and fitness goals during the fast.

"Ramadan is also a cherished time of community, often spent reconnecting with family and friends, " Pompeo said. It is the most holy month in the calendar for Muslims as it is believed the Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammed during Ramadan.

Japan GDP On Tap For Wednesday
The GDP deflator fell 0.2% on year, defying forecasts for a gain of 0.3% following the flat reading in the previous three months. However, there are concerns that trade friction with the USA could affect demand for exports.

Thursday will be the first day of Ramadan in all other Gulf states as well as in many Arab and Muslim countries.

Fasting is not considered compulsory for many groups - including people who are unwell or have a long-term condition; people with learning difficulties; people who are travelling; and women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or menstruating.

The Holy Month is expected to start on Thursday, May 17, 2018. "Our Constitution ensures Muslims can observe Ramadan in accordance with the dictates of conscience and unimpeded by government", Trump said in a statement. The prayer consists of a sermon followed by the short congregational prayer.

It's common practice across many Muslim-majority nations for liquor stores and hotels to curb the sale of alcohol during Ramadan.

Muslims also celebrate an evening of utmost importance called Laylat al-Qadr, known in English as the "Night of Power", which happens to be the night when the first revelation of the Quran was received by Muhammad.

"Being a minority religion is always challenging, and it's rewarding at the same time", Enchassi said.
