Barça, Real Madrid favor increasing number of Club World Championship participants

Real Madrid back FIFA's plans for 24-team Club World Cup

There would be 12 clubs from Europe and Fifa's preferred option for the first edition of the tournament is to invite those clubs who have won at least three Champions Leagues or European Cups.

Federation Internationale de Football Association president Gianni Infantino has apparently held discussions with representatives from some of the European heavyweights despite strong opposition from his former employers at Uefa, European soccer's governing body. Backers from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are also reported to be involved. The other twelve clubs will be picked from around the world.

Liverpool could be set for a £100m boost after the new Club World Cup deal was put on the table.

Barcelona's board of directors says the expanded tournament would be "exciting, dynamic, inclusive and prestigious".

The late professor's ashes are set to be interred alongside other great scientists like Sir Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin.

Infantino insists that the new format will reduce the number of games the "great players" would play in each four-year cycle, but the leagues are sceptical and object to cramming new competitions into the football calendars.

Ziegler reports that Infantino, who has already pushed through an expansion of the Fifa World Cup to 48 teams from 2026, is keen to secure an agreement on the Club World Cup before this summer's World Cup kicks off in Russian Federation on 14th June. It will replace the Confederations cup and current Club World Cup which features the winners of the UEFA, CONCACAF, AFC, CAF, OFC and CONMEBOL Champions Leagues.

"FIFA itself has highlighted the worldwide match calendar's congestion and lack of rest periods for players most in demand", Premier League chief executive Richard Scumadore told.
