23-month-old Alfie Evans has constant seizures. Mourners applauded and threw flowers as the cortege passed by following a private service earlier in the day.

Alfie, who suffered from a degenerative brain condition, lost his life after spending more than a year in hospital.

One card read: 'Alfie.

The terminally ill toddler, who was in a semi-vegetative state from a degenerative condition that medics were not able to definitively identify, died in hospital on April 28.

A key argument presented by Evans, 21, and James, 20, "was that they should decide what is best for their son", adds the broadcaster.

During the protracted legal battle, Alder Hey Children's Hospital said staff had experienced "unprecedented personal abuse" as it found itself at the centre of a "social media storm" as a result of the case.
