Tennis star goes on racket-smashing rampage to umpire's chair

Former world No 1 Karolina Pliskova unleashed on the umpire's chair after her controversial defeat to Greece's Maria Sakkari at the Italian Open on Wednesday (Thursday NZ time).

After a lengthy delay that saw Pliskova call for the tournament supervisor, Sakkari converted the subsequent break point before serving out the match.

World number six Pliskova had a number of run-ins with Mrozinska during the stormy match and now faces a heavy fine from the WTA. The victory means the 24-year-old Gavrilova recorded her first top 10 victory of the year, and her first back-to-back match wins since Acapulco in February.

Gavrilova came from 4-0 down in the final set to edge third seed Muguruza 5-7 6-2 7-6 (8-6) in a marathon clash lasting more than three hours.

Pliskova did not shake Mrozinska's hand and instead smashed her racket several times against the side of the umpire's chair, breaking the wood.

The sixth seed was tied at 5-5 in the deciding set with her Greek opponent when her smash was called out by a line judge.

Pliskova's sister, Kristyna, went on to call for the umpire to be banned.

The Czech exchanged a brief word with Sakkari at the net before approaching Mrozinska with an outstretched hand before withdrawing it and repeatedly smashing the chair with her racket.
