Amazon's Global Smart Speaker Share Drops Following the Launch of HomePod

Amazon's global smart speaker share drops below 50 percent in first quarter

At its annual developer conference last week, Google had said that the Assistant, rolled out just three years back, can now be accessed on 500 million devices across 30 languages in 80 countries.

The standout in the stats is Google Home, which sold 2.4 million units in the quarter for a 26.5 percent market share, double its market share from a year ago but more importantly a 709 percent increase in unit sales.

Amazon has appeared to be the market leader and have estimated to ship 4 million smart speakers during the quarter.

The analysts use the word "shipped", which may mean that the actual sales of smart speakers HomePod even less, writes The Verge.

According to a report by a market research firm Strategy Analytics, smart speaker shipment has increased from 2.4 million units in the first quarter of 2017 to 9.2 million units in the first quarter of 2018 with Amazon and Google accounting for almost 70 per cent share in the global smart speaker market shipment during the same time. Meanwhile, the newer kids on the block of Alibaba, Apple, and Xiaomi achieved 0.7m, 0.6m, and 0.2m shipments respectively.

Two new Nokia X could be launched, X6 may be China exclusive
Connectivity aspects include 4G VoLTE , NFC, USB Type-C, a 3.5mm audio jack and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The smartphone is backed by a 3060mAh battery with support for Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging support.

Apple, though, has remained tight-lipped about the precise number of HomePods it sold when the product belatedly saw the light of day on 9 February - its silence has been interpreted as a tacit admission that the HomePod is not selling as well as expected.

Apple shares opened lower in the US Friday as a new report places its HomePod in fourth place in the still small - but growing - smart speaker market.

"Alibaba and Xiaomi are leading the way in China and their strength in the domestic market alone is proving enough to propel them into the global top five", Watkins was quoted as saying. Both Amazon and Google dominate despite their speakers not bring available in the Chinese market.

"We are clearly heading towards a time in the not-too-distant future when voice becomes a standard mode of technology interaction alongside established approaches like keyboard, mouse and touchscreen".
