Press Secretary of the White house Sarah Sanders said that the United States alone the statement of North Korea, and will continue to closely coordinate its actions with its allies, according to Voice of America. "The president is very used [to] and ready for tough negotiations, and if they want to meet we'll be ready, and if they don't, that's okay too".

Earlier, the White House said it was "still hopeful" the summit would take place.

Separately, Bolton said the deputies committee of the National Security Council held a meeting on Wednesday morning to discuss the Chinese telecommunications company ZTE and was working to prepare options for Trump "as soon as we can".

North Korea says the summit can proceed only if America is "sincere" about improving relations.

Pyongyang may reconsider its decision to participate in a summit with the USA in case Washington continues demanding unilateral denuclearization, North Korean First Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Kye-gwan said on Wednesday.

In that case, he added, Pyongyang would have to "reconsider" its participation at next month's summit in Singapore.

January 1: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un says in his New Year's address that he has a nuclear button on his desk, but also calls for improved relations with the South. Trump responds that he has a bigger and more powerful nuclear button, "and my Button works!"

After giving up his atomic programme, Kadhafi was killed in 2011 in an uprising backed by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation bombing. This apparently is a reference to the administration's demand that North Korea agree to "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization". But so far, the North has given no public indication of what it is offering, beyond a broad commitment to denuclearization of the "Korean Peninsula".

Ms Sanders said threats from the North to scrap the meeting were "something that we fully expected".

Experts said the demands were standard operating procedure for Pyongyang.

The White House didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Heather Nauert: "We are operating under the idea and the notion that the president's meeting is going forward with Chairman-with Chairman Kim next month".

"Trump surprised everybody by accepting this summit quickly and I don't think the regime was expecting it", said Thiessen. We wish the president every success in this meeting.

Analysts said Pyongyang appeared to be trying to redefine the terms of the debate. Under such an arrangement, analysts said, North Korea would be treated like the Soviet Union and later Russian Federation, which were asked to limit, rather than eliminate, their arsenals.

Seoul's financial markets took the threats in stride, with traders viewing it as a negotiating tactic on the part of the North Korean leader.
