BMW Teases iNext EV
A new electric vehicle is under work by BMW and they have given us its first glimpse.
BMW is perhaps being a bit more circumspect than other premium vehicle makers when it comes to EVs and Autonomy, but it too is heading deep in to an electric future, and at their AGM yesterday Board Chairman Harald Kruger revealed an initial design concept for a new electric BMW iNEXT (above).
Now it's not much, but today at the company's Annual General Meeting, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Harald Krüger, unveiled an initial design concept for the iNEXT.
The company previously hinted at a range of up to 435 miles, presumably based on the generous NEDC test cycle.
The iNext is scheduled to enter production at BMW's Dingolfing factory in 2021.
BMW is looking to rekindle consumer excitement after a few subdued years during which Mercedes took the lead in luxury vehicle sales with a revamped model lineup featuring vehicles such as the GLC crossover and a reworked sporty A class. For the first time, we're combining all key technologies for future mobility in one vehicle. Though, according to Krüger, we should see a Vision Concept of this upcoming fully-electric, fully-connected and highly autonomous BMW later this year.
The automaker has also confirmed the iNext will offer Level 3 self-driving capability in certain highway situations. The iNEXT will most likely become the brand's second pure-electric production vehicle, following the i3.
BMW has offered up its first official "look" at its iNext technology flagship.
Set to be the same size as the firm's current X5, the iNEXT will sit on BMW's next-generation common platform that will also underpin conventional petrol and diesel cars, plus plug-in hybrids.
Krüger explained that going forward, all fully electric BMW models introduced would carry the i designation.
