Cambridge Analytica's suspended head to appear before UK committee

Mark Zuckerberg agrees to meeting with EU officials in Brussels

Cambridge Analytica's chief executive officer Alexander Nix gives an interview during the 2017 Web Summit in Lisbon

It is the latest development in the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which saw the data of around 87m Facebook users worldwide collected by the firm.

The conference of presidents, a governing body comprising the elected heads of the European Parliament's political groupings, has also made a decision to organise a hearing with Facebook, providing members of the LIBE committee to carry out an in-depth analysis of aspects related to personal data protection, with emphasis placed on its role in elections. But the Parliament President Antonio Tajani shoots her down on Twitter, saying "It's not your job to control and criticise the European Parliament".

The EU meeting however is set to be private with the leaders of the political groups and a justice and civil rights expert.

Mr Tajani had invited Mr Zuckerberg, saying that the 2.7 million European Union citizens affected by the data sharing scandal deserved a full explanation.

However, Zuckerberg has insisted that when he answers questions about how his platform impacts the privacy of hundreds of millions of European citizens - the entire discussion remain closed doors. "I welcome Mark Zuckerberg's decision to appear in person before the representatives of 500 million Europeans", Mr Tajani said.

Student, teacher killed, 43 injured in USA bus crash
Mount Olive Mayor Robert Greenbaum said he responded to the scene when he heard passengers may have been ejected during the crash. The collision between the bus and dump truck caused the school bus to rip apart, tearing off the front end and undercarriage.

Earlier this week the Committee lamented Schroepfer's testimony, saying that the United States social network has continued to leave "significant gaps" in answers it has provided to British MPs. The committee will use the opportunity to address numerous inconsistencies in his previous evidence.

"Given that these were follow up questions to questions Mr. Schroepfer previously failed to answer, we expected both detail and data, and in a number of cases got excuses", Collins wrote.

That suggests he will avoid an uncomfortable public appearance and instead meet only with the legislature's top brass behind closed doors. Guy Verhofstadt, the liberal leader, announced he would boycott the meeting unless it was public, asking why it could not be streamed on Facebook Live.

"The Conference of Presidents has agreed that Mark Zuckerberg should come to clarify issues related to the use of personal data in a meeting with representatives of the European Parliament", Tajani said in a statement.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will come into force on 25 May, and will allow any individual in Europe to ask a company for data held about them.
