68% of the world population projected to live in urban areas by 2050, says UN

Delhi will be world’s most populous city by 2028 says UN report

By the year 2050, 68% of the world's population will live in urban areas, the United Nations said on Wednesday. Currently, the world is home to 31 megacities - the largest of which is Tokyo with an agglomeration of 37 million inhabitants - but the report estimates that by 2030, the world could have 43, the majority of which will be in developing countries.

The population of Moscow, which became a city of 10 million in 2000 and surpassed the 12-million mark three years ago, will be growing at a slower pace in the near future, according to United Nations experts. Most of this growth is expecting to be concentrated in just a handful of countries.

According to the UN's figures, which are based on the assessments of national statistics agencies, about 144 million people are now living in Russian Federation, with 74.4% (107.2 million) of them being the urban population. Also, two other factors - Economic contraction and natural disasters -have triggered population losses in some cities.

The report also projected that the world's population itself will peak in a few years and decline by 2050. For those surprised that Kozhikode rather than Kochi enters the list from Kerala, here is even more surprising news. India, China and Nigeria were projected to be the countries driving global urbanisation, between them accounting for about a third of the global addition to urban population between now and 2050.

Based on the report, Tokyo's population is predicted to begin declining by 2020, while the Indian capital of New Delhi will become the most populous city on the planet by 2028. However, some of the fastest-growing urban agglomerations are cities with fewer than a million inhabitants, many of them located in Asia and Africa.

New Delhi will become the world's most populated city around 2028, the report said.

Blokes lead the way as WA jobless rate tumbles
The participation rate climbed to 65.6 percent, near levels seen in early 2011, as more women entered the labour force. It has fallen just 0.2 percentage points over the past year and has even ticked a little higher since November.

Understanding the key trends in urbanization likely to unfold over the coming years is crucial to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including efforts to forge a new framework of urban development.

The report added that linkages between urban and rural areas would need to be strengthened, building on their existing economic, social and environmental ties.

Currently, India has the largest rural population (893 million), followed by China (578 million).

The growth is caused by an accelerating shift from rural to urban living across the world, particularly in Asia, which despite hosting some of the world's largest cities has lagged behind other parts of the world in terms of overall urbanization.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that DESA in earlier report said: "By 2050, the third most populous country will be Nigeria, which now ranks seventh, and which is poised to replace the U.S.".
