Leonardo DiCaprio & Steven Spielberg May Reteam for Ulysses S. Grant Biopic

Leonardo Di Caprio Steven Spielberg

Jaws director Steven Spielberg and Titanic star Leonardo Di Caprio may come together for an Ulysses S Grant's biopic at Lionsgate.

This will not be the first time that Spielberg will be working on an American President's biopic. He has directed DiCaprio in 2002's Catch Me if You Can. Sources told Deadline that production companies Lionsgate and Appian Way, which acquired the film rights to Grant a year ago, see the production of the movie as a priority.

The film would be adapted from the Ron Chernow biography after Lionsgate and Appian Way acquired movie rights to Grant towards the end of 2017.

Spielberg has a few other irons in the fire at the moment too, including the forthcoming fifth movie in the Indiana Jones series, and a new screen adaptation of West Side Story. These two have a lot going on outside of Grant, but the picture in question is now being reported as a priority project thanks in part to Chernow's Pulitzer Prize-winning status and "Hamilton!" claim to fame, having written the biography that served as source material for Lin-Manuel Miranda's hit musical. He is credited for bringing back economic stability in the post-Civil War era along with organised and structural removal of slavery.

He won decisive battles at Shiloh and at Vicksburg in 1863, after which he led the combined Union armies, and is hailed as one of the great military strategists. After resigning from the Army due to alcoholism, he had another turn under Abraham Lincoln, becoming his most trusted Army General. He was a champion for black Americans and worked to crush the Ku Klux Klan, even as there were scandals involving administration's leaders.
