Two weeks after Hawaii volcano eruption, residents say it's getting worse

Explosive eruption at Hawaii volcano
Kilauea is one of five active volcanoes on the island of Hawaii.
"This has relieved pressure temporarily", U.S. Geological Survey geologist Michelle Coombs told a news conference in Hilo. The USGS estimates the rock was about 2 feet (0.6 meters) across before it broke up on impact.
The volcano.it's a real dynamic situation up there. we could have additional events like this morning that punch up and then die back down really quickly. we could have more sustained ash.
The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) announces a new fissure 21 opened on Thursday, May 17, 2018, downrift of Makamae Street in Leilani Estates.
And now, scientists are warning that an explosive eruption may occur at the summit crater within weeks.
The resulting ash plume may affect the surrounding areas.
Hawai'i's Kilauea volcano has spewed ash almost 9 kilometres into the air and scientists have warned this could be the first of a violent string of explosions in the crater.
Volcanic smog - known as "vog" - is now being emitted by the fissures, traveling toward populated areas and threatening residents with unsafe sulfur dioxide.
"I think it's going to be a series of explosions similar to the one that happened this morning, and that's based on what happened in 1924, which is really our only analog", he said of the almost century old event, which lasted 2-1/2 weeks and killed one person who was hit by a "ballistic block".
Historically, Kilauea's rumblings have not been as deadly as other volcanoes around the world, said Steve Malone, an emeritus research professor of volcanology at the University of Washington in Seattle.
The volcano first erupted on May 3rd, and has since been spewing lava and volcanic rocks. This type of eruption has the potential to carpet the Big Island in much thicker ash than current dustings.
Two hundred miles separate Oahu from the Big Island, where lava flows and the threat of a massive volcanic explosion have drawn worldwide attention to rural subdivisions on the island's east side. But ash could still present a problem for people with respiratory problems, and officials are monitoring the wind and weather patterns to predict where the ash from the volcano will go.
Although she could not say with certainty, Coombs said that the event appeared consistent with the dropping lava lake hitting ground water, as geologists have been expecting. At the same time, tourism is the island's biggest industry and people's livelihoods are dependent on visitors coming, he said.
