White House reportedly eliminates top cybersecurity role
That official would synchronize cybersecurity policy across agencies in much the same way that White House cybersecurity coordinator Rob Joyce was doing until he stepped down last week.
The White House has eliminated the role of Cybersecurity Coordinator, generally viewed as the top cybersecurity role in the U.S. government.
Politicoreported last week that Bolton was trying to eliminate the top cyber policy role.
The bill would establish the new National Office for Cyberspace under the Executive Office of the President, and its Senate-confirmed director would be charged with "recommending security measures and budgets for Federal agencies, coordinating issues relating to cyberspace across the government while promoting civil liberties, and centralizing defense of Federal information infrastructure in the event of a large-scale attack", Langevin's statement read.
In response to the council's move, Democrats in Congress have introduced legislation that would create a National Office for Cyberspace at the White House.
The US government has killed off a top government position for cyber policy, the media were reporting earlier this week. "It is an enormous step backwards to deemphasize the importance of this growing domain within the White House", he said.
"We have had three excellent cybersecurity coordinators since the late Howard Schmidt originated the position".
Politico first reported earlier on Tuesday that the position had been scrapped, citing an email from an aide to national security adviser John Bolton that was sent to NSC employees, and provided to the newspaper by a former US official.
The cyber coordinator role, set up during the Obama administration, was tasked with harmonising the government's approach to cybersecurity and digital warfare.
"The role of cyber coordinator will end", Christine Samuelian, an aide to Bolton, wrote in the email.
An NSC spokesman said that the move would further "empower" the senior directors that make up the council and streamline its operations. The coordinator was also present at meetings with foreign partners.
